I see enough GK reviews to know that’s never the case anymore. On their website, the description says how Champions Club is known for its pristine conditioning. However, conditioning is also an ongoing issue here. The big clubhouse is very nice and the facilities are great overall, so the place gives off a higher-end feel than similarly priced courses in the area. For the record, I did play the whites that day and it was probably a good idea as a first-time visitor. He may be right and he may have just been trying to be helpful, but I didn’t like the tone of it and it set things off on the wrong foot. When I replied “no,” he grumbled “well, you better play from the white tees then.” He said it in a very confrontational way. The very first thing the pro shop guy said to me (before any kind of “Hello” or a “How can I help you?”) was “Are you a scratch golfer?” I remember the first (and only other) time I played there a few years ago. They’ve been public for several years now, but there’s still an air of “snootiness” that some may like and others may not. As part of a nice residential community (The Retreat, of course), the club used to be strictly private. On another level, there’s an aspect of service. On the other hand, there are some very unusual and tricky hole designs that aren’t for the faint of heart, and I can certainly understand why some people despise the actual layout. It’s a visually stunning course running up and down through a rugged canyon setting and it’s a true “target” golf design that puts a bigger premium on accuracy than distance. There are aspects of Champions Club that appeal greatly to me and the style of game I like to play. It’s the place that people love to hate, yet I know a handful who do really like what it offers. After all, for my warm-up round I made a return visit to the course with perhaps the most drama of them all… Champions Club at The Retreat įrom my experience, this is easily the most polarizing course design in all of Southern California. ![]() If you clicked on a link just to read about that course, you’ll want to scroll down because my first review is a bit lengthy. The afternoon match was set at Hidden Valley Golf Club. Adding to the drama was the afternoon round was my second match of this year’s GK Cup () tournament. Hope pace of play can be improved and hope management can manage the course a bit better.Saturday found me playing a double-dip on two of the Inland Empire’s more “dramatic” designs. We are easy going and patience but there comes a point were people break. people are paying high money and its totally unfair that we had to call it quits at the 12 hole. ![]() My review is in hopes that they improve these aspects. We had to wait for a cart for like 30 minutes and then had to wait another 15 minutes to tee off. In addition, at 1st I was totally cool with my next complaint but after our experience i became uneasy about it. I saw him around 12:30pm ant that was that so I dont think it was him perhaps just the way the course is managed. i saw the marshal only once, great older guy. Where was the marshal? It was only 3:30pm. Every group was waiting for the group ahead of them and in some holes you even had 3 groups waiting to tee off. Every hole had 3 groups at the tee, fairway and green. The back 9 would of definitely taken us 4 hours. When we saw this, of course we became upset. it seemed like a family and they seemed to be enjoying themselves but man, this is not how you play golf. There was a group in the 17th hole with 7 players. In hole number 12 we then waited 15 minutes and we then became annoyed since it was also getting late so we decided to drive the whole course to hopefully pass a group that might perhaps be holding everyone back. ![]() Once we reached the 11th hole, Im not exaggerating when I say that we waited approximately 25minutes. Waiting for the next hole was fair, no more than 5 minutes. I went during MLK holiday there were a lot of people but it wasnt overwhelmed. They replied to the reviewer that they are looking into the improvement of place of play. I just read a review that was left a few months ago regarding pace of play and a marshals. The course is well maintained so now why a 2 star rating?. all of these factors make the course great and I praise them for this. The course is challenging not just because of the lay out but because of wind, elevations, and widths of fairways.
